Houston flood victims still need help

On April 20, 2016, thousands of people evacuated their homes and many major highways closed due to overwhelming rain in the Houston area. Some parts of northwest Harris County and Houston saw up to 15 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, with most of the rainfall occurring within 10 hours.

In the aftermath of the historic floods that swept the Houston area this past April, the American Red Cross needs you to help the many families and individuals in our community that have been displaced from their homes.

Several shelters in the Houston area are looking for volunteer staff to help their fellow Houstonians. Open 24 hours a day, these shelters provide a warm place to stay, food and emotional support for Houston residents not able to remain in their homes due to storms and flooding. These shelters need volunteers at all locations and at any time of day. Here’s a list of shelters that are currently in need of volunteers:

  • East Montgomery County Community Center – Montgomery County
  • First United Methodist Church – Montgomery County
  • Jersey Village Baptist Church – Harris County
  • MO Campbell Education Center – Harris County
  • Royal High School – Waller County
  • South County Community Center – Montgomery County
  • Acres Homes – Harris County
  • Sawdust Road Baptist Church – Montgomery County

All shelters provide training on site so you can start helping the community right away. If you’re interested in assisting with flood or storm-related needs, visit redcross.org/volunteer or redcross.org/donate.
