The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation recently received a donation from a community service agency to help support Houstonians’ reading skills. Houston Chronicle tells us that the $300,000 donation was made to help launch programs and spread the word about improving literacy rates in Houston, although specific funds have not yet been allocated.
The Bush foundation expanded reading programs for children and adults as well as increased public library access in a push towards their goal, expanding pre-kindergarten classes and adult literacy programs. Houston Mayor Annise Parker is incredibly thankful for the generous donation and expects this will give the campaign the push it needs to unite and improve literacy skills all across the city.
The one-year-old foundation has raised almost $2 million since it started, with all of the funds going towards children’s books and training for the volunteers. The foundation hopes this will spark other donations from local businesses to help support citizens of our community.
