Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor ‘Breaks Up’ With Her Leg

Last month Rebekah DiMartino wrote a break up letter, then posted it on Facebook for everyone to read, however this wasn’t a typical break up letter.

Hey it’s me.

I’m sure it won’t come as a shock to you when I say that we’ve grown apart. The love that we once had has dwindled, and this relationship has become a real burden on my life. We have been through a lot together. We have seen a lot of places, done a lot of things, and you have helped me through some of the toughest steps thus far. I promise to always treasure that. And I’m not saying this isn’t hard for me. It is. But as tough as it may be, I feel like our time together has come to an end. I need to feel everyday that by having a relationship with you, I am becoming a better person. And for a long while now, I haven’t felt like that. Instead, I feel like you are holding me back from really reaching my full potential. Now I get this is probably pretty tough to hear me say, but I have never lied to you and I don’t plan to start now. What I need is something you can’t give me anymore. And the empathy that you require, I can no longer handle. I love you. I really do. But I think I need to start on the next leg of my journey. So with that said, I have enclosed a gift certificate that I hope you will use. Go get yourself one last pedicure on me and enjoy it because tomorrow…I will be cutting you out of my life for good.

Wishing you the best wherever you end up,

Rebekah

She wrote it about her left leg.  ABC7 Eyewitness News reports that after multiple surgeries due being seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombing a year and a half ago, her left leg still was never the same, and Rebekah felt that they had “grown apart.” She had shielded her son from the blast, taking the brunt of it to the back of her legs, a decision that she feels blessed to have made.

Ready to reclaim her life and move forward from the horrible memory of the terror attack that almost took her and her son’s life, Rebekah felt that her left leg was holding her back. She was left with limited mobility, unable to walk properly without the use of crutches or a wheelchair since the attacks, and decided it was time to get rid of it and allow herself to have a more fulfilling life.

Before her amputation she showed off her pedicure with the words “It’s not you, it’s me” hand written in sharpie along the scars on her leg.  Her family celebrated with a last supper, and her friends all got matching manicures and pedicures featuring the Boston Strong ribbon and colors.

“Life was never promised to be easy but guess what? That’s ok. Because when we find that silver lining in the toughest of places, it always seems to be worth it. And sometimes that may mean making tough decisions to get rid of what is holding us back. But I’m here to tell you that when that happens…the possibilities are endless. So if that is you today, whatever battles you are up against…rock on!!! Because even though I don’t even have a leg to stand on, I have found my silver lining and nothing can take that away from me,”  she stated a recent Facebook post.

Rebekah has remained positive and excited about the outlook after her amputation surgery. She’ll no longer be confined to a wheelchair and experiencing the pain she did while trying to heal her leg.  She continues to display great sense of humor and optimism in her Facebook posts, while sharing with CW39 that she is planning to run in the Boston Marathon, climb mountains and do as many crazy things as she can on her long bucket list of things people do with their legs.

Proving that you don’t have to feel sorry for yourself, and tragic events don’t have to define who you are, Rebekah DiMartino is holding her head up high and celebrating this step as a new chapter of her life, not a loss.
